DIR® and DIRFloortime®
What is DIR®?
DIR® stands for D-evelopmental, I-ndividual differences and R-elationship based model. DIR® is a comprehensive theoretical framework of how human emotional and social development proceeds. DIRFloortime® is the application of the principals of the model, and can be used as an approach to inform the practice of a wide range of professionals who work closely with others to support and maximize their development. DIRFloortime® is an evidenced based practice; providing therapists, educators and doctors with a strengths-based and respectful way to promote human development across a range of developmental systems. Human connection is the foundation of our very existence; it should likewise be the foundation of how we promote and support development for all people.
The DIRFloortime® Approach
DIRFloortime® is the approach that we use to inform our therapies at Baby Steps Therapy. Social and emotional development is intricately linked, both physiologically and practically to all other aspects of development, including motor development, speech and language development and the development of cognition and executive functions. One major underpinning of our development is that it happens within relationships, and human connection. Another important aspect is that for every human, our emotional and social systems develop together with our sensory and motor systems. They are intertwined throughout the model. We believe that when we can understand our client’s and caregiver’s individual profiles, as well as our own; and when we can harness that client’s sensory, emotional and motor systems synchronously within our therapies; we are not only able to support meaningful development, but the impact will foster deeply rooted and long-lasting positive outcomes.
